Melting Vinyl present: Gwenno + Omaloma
Welsh electro-pop singer-songwriter Gwenno (of the Pipettes) returns to Brighton with her musique-concrete beats and synth-laden music and new LP Le Kov (out on Heavenly Records).
Gwenno Saunders is a music producer, DJ, radio presenter and singer from Cardiff. Her debut solo album, 'Y Dydd Olaf' followed a string of critically acclaimed EP's - 'Chwyldro', 'Golau Arall' and 'Fratolish Hiang Perpeshki / Calon Peiriant' and there will be no stopping her musical rise.
Written entirely in Cornish, new album Le Kov is an exploration of the individual and collective subconscious, the myths and drolls of Cornwall, and the survival of Britain’s lesser-known Brythonic language. As one of the language’s few fluent speakers, Gwenno felt a duty to make her second album entirely in Cornish: to create a document of a living language, explore her identity and the endless creative possibilities of a tongue that has a very small surviving artistic output, despite having been around for at least 15 centuries.
From 2005-2010 Gwenno was a writer and performer as a member of Brighton-based conceptual pop band The Pipettes and more recently, toured as a synth player with Australian duo Pnau (Empire Of The Sun) and Elton John. She is a native Welsh and Cornish speaker and it’s this along with co-producing and co-hosting Welsh language show Cam O’r Tywyllwch (A Step Away From The Darkness) with Peski for Radio Cardiff and more recently, Resonance FM, that has led her to create music that translates her internationalist influences into layered, home-fi keyboard sounds wrapped in echoed vocals and musique concrète-inspired beats.
